2016-2017 / 2017-2018 Hay Season Comparison Report

July 26, 2018No CommentsNatalie Bell

As the hay season draws to a close it is now time to reflect on the season and the values of hay tested at Feed Central.

The following Figures 1-3 contain the low, high and average values of Metabolisable Energy, Crude protein, Neutral Detergent Fibre, Acid Detergent Fibre and Water Soluble Carbohydrates of Lucerne hay, Oaten Hay and Vetch hay for the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 seasons.

Figure 1: Comparison between Lucerne Hay nutritional parameters for 2016/2017 season and 2017/2018 season

Figure 1 depicts the season average, low and high values of Lucerne Hay. The data shows the Metabolisable Energy of Lucerne Hay had an average of 9.3MJ/kg for both 2016-2017 and 2017/2018 seasons. The Crude Protein is marginally high for 2017/2018 at 19.7% compared to the previous season’s 19.2%. The Water Soluble Carbohydrates for 2016/2017 at 8.7% are 0.5% higher than the current season.  The Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) is slightly lower for 2016/2017 compared to 2017/2018, while the Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) has maintained a nearly equivalent value of 32.8 to 32.9%.

Figure 2: Comparison between Oaten Hay 16/17 nutritional parameters for 2016/2017 season and 2017/2018 season

Figure 2 depicts the season average, low and high values of Oaten Hay. The Metabolisable energy from 2016/2017 is marginally lower than the current season’s average of 9.4. The previous season also had a reasonably significant lower crude protein of 7.5% compared to 9.2%. The Water Soluble Carbohydrate values are also lower for 2016/2017 then 2017/2018. This in turn has resulted in an increased fibre content for the 2016/2017 season, with figures of 58.6% NDF and 37.3% ADF, compared to 2017/2018’s 54.1% NDF and 33.7% ADF.

Figure 3: Comparison between Vetch Hay nutritional values for 2016/2017 season and 2017/2018 season

Figure 3 depicts the season average of Vetch Hay. The 2017/2018 has a higher Metabolisable Energy of 9.3MJ, an increase of 0.6MJ compared to 2016/2017’s 8.7MJ. There is a very marginal difference between the Crude Protein values with 2016/2017 having the higher average by 0.2%. 2017/2018 had a higher value of Water Soluble Carbohydrates of 11% compared to 7.9% of the previous season. It can then be expected and the values confirm that the NDF and ADF averages for 2016/2017 are higher than the current season.
