Today is national hay safe day so I took a few minutes to research particular items like “hay deaths”; “hay injury” and “hay safety” on google. Within seconds I was shocked and deeply moved by the stories that appeared in front of me.
Google rapidly bought up stories from places we live or visit regularly such as the Riverina, Darling Downs, Mallee, Wimmera, South East S.A, W.A, N.T and more. What shocked me was the number of stories that are less than 12 months old. It also bought back memories of a near miss that my then 8 year old son had when I was inspecting hay with my family in 2011.
My point is that no community or family is immune to this tragedy; it all seems so close to home.
Below you will find some links to a small number of articles I found on hay related accidents (some stories were so horrific that I decided not to share them).
I have also included some links to some resources for on farm and hay safety, including a 90 second video about managing hay safety.
I encourage you to take the time to read these articles and resources and also share this amongst your family, friends, staff and associates. I hope that by spreading this message we can all operate safely at all times.
Today being National Hay Safe Day and everyday; the team here at Feed Central hopes and prays that everyday is a safe day. In addition we extend our deepest sympathies to those who are personally affected by these and all farm accidents.
