How to Submit a Feed Sample for Testing

Accurate sampling leads to accurate results — here’s how to collect the right sample for hay, silage, grain, pellets, and mixed rations.

The best way to get representative results is using a corer to take samples from multiple points throughout your product. If you notice quality differences across your batch, it’s worth submitting separate samples from those areas. Surface “grab” samples just won’t give you the complete picture you need.

Please use express post for high moisture samples to maintain moisture integrity.

SILAGE

  • Pit/Bunker – For the most accurate result, take samples before opening by using a long coring probe to reach deep into the stack. If already open, grab samples from at least 10 random spots across a freshly cut face — not just the top layer.

  • Wrapped Bales – Sample at least 10% of bales using a corer (same method as round hay bales). Be sure to reseal any holes in the plastic immediately to maintain sample integrity.

    STANDING CROP OR PASTURE

    • Randomly sample from multiple points throughout the paddock, cutting samples at grazing height. Avoid collecting soil or manure with these samples.

    HAY

To get a representative sample, core or grab from at least 10% of bales in your lot — once per bale.

    • Coring Method – Core round bales on the side, at the centre of the curve. For square bales, core at the end and at a right angle.
    • Grab Sample Method – Take a handful from the selected bales, sampling from inside the bale (not the weathered outer edge).

    Grains, Meals, and Pellets

    • Silo – A running sample is required, randomly drawing 5 or more samples.
    • Trailer Load – Gather samples from 5 or more random locations from front to rear of the load. If possible, use a long, slotted grain probe to reach deep into the load.
    • Bags – Probe diagonally from top corner to bottom corner from 10% of the bags in your lot.
